Planning your Marketing Strategy like a pro

Hi! It’s me, Helle from Greenie Online, and today we have to talk about planning. I know! I’m sorry we have to talk about planning, but this is very important, and, to be honest, it’s something I’m not very good at, so it’s somewhat ironic that I want to talk about this.

Planning is something we all must do.

If you have a business or you want to grow a business, you have to think in terms of planning to be able to get things done. For instance, if I don’t plan, I might get things done, but it’s going to be hectic, and I’ll have to work for several nights until the late hours. This is not the way you (or I) want to run a business.

So, your marketing efforts need to be planned, and it’s very simple, actually.

The first thing you should do is make a goal that is your top goal. For instance, you might say, ‘I want to have twenty new clients in three months’, but, how are you going to do that?

I like to take a sketchbook, draw a box on the top of a blank page, and write my primary goal down: ‘I want twenty clients three months from now’. Then, I ask myself, ‘What should I do to get there’?

Well, I should probably call some newspapers to see if I can get something in print. I should call somebody and ask if they want to do a joint venture. I should run some ads or something — stuff like that, so the next part is, ‘What things do I need to do’? I need to call the newspaper, call Jennifer to see if she wants to do a joint venture, and design a Facebook ad.

These are big goals, so you’ll want to put them in boxes underneath your primary goal. For example, calling the newspaper is something that has several steps to it, because you have to have a story. You have to sit down and write your story and then figure out whom to call at which newspaper. You must also do this in plenty of time so you can be sure that they have time to print your story.

Then, calling Jennifer about doing a joint venture also needs to be broken down, because you need to have something to tell her. You need to have an offer, a good idea, a price point, something. All of these things also need to be done.

If you want to do a Facebook ad, you need to figure out your graphics and research to see what audience you want to target. You also need a landing page or something like it. So, these are all different smaller steps, and you place them in boxes underneath each task that gets you to your primary goal.

The next thing you must do with these smaller steps in their boxes is you go in and put dates on them. You have to plan when your are going to do each item, because if it doesn’t have a date on it, it’s not going to get done.

So, put in a date on each specific thing you need to do, and then you’ll have your goal in the end if everything goes right.

This is the way the pros do it, and it’s the same thing if you want to have a nice vegetable garden, for instance. You have to spend some time preparing the soil. You have to buy the seeds. You have to make the beds for the seeds. You have to prune. You have to water. You have to harvest — all this stuff. Gardening has a specific task structure, and it’s the same thing with your marketing.

So, please sit down and write down goals for the next three months, six months, or whatever, and break them down into smaller pieces and put dates in each box. That way, everything is going to get done.
