How to decide if you should do it yourself or get some help in your business
Hi! It’s me, Helle from Greenie-Online, and today I would like to talk with you about whether you should do things yourself or get some help doing them. I will use two stages of growth in plants to illustrate what I mean.
I usually sow my own seeds, and then I take my baby plants and plant them in my garden. Then, they grow, and it’s nice and fine.
There are some plants, however, that are quite difficult to grow, so it’s much easier to buy them partially or fully grown already and plant those rather than sowing the seeds myself. You can do both, but there’s a big difference in having to do things yourself or buying things that are already made or having someone do it for you.
Now, in business, this could be for instance your website or your marketing plan or your graphic design — all of this stuff. All of these things I’m talking about, you can do yourself — it’s totally possible to teach yourself how to do all this stuff — but you can also skip a step, save some time, and have somebody else help you.
You must remember that when you run your business or startup your business you have two choices: Either you can do it yourself and save some money or you can have somebody else do it and save some time. These are the two options you have, so you must figure out the things you have to do in your business that you really enjoy and you are good at doing and the things you don’t enjoy that somebody else can do much better than you can.
Since this is only two things, it’s not that complicated, but I see a lot of people struggle with this. They say, ‘Oh no! I have to have a new website, I have to get some graphics done, I have to get a new logo, I have to do this marketing campaign’… or whatever, and they spend a lot of time trying to learn how to do these things well when they could save both money and time actually by having somebody else tell them how to do it or do it for them.
So, you really have to think about the things you do in your business one by one. Ask yourself, ‘Is each thing something that I do really well? Do I enjoy it or is it something that I should have somebody else who is better at doing it do this for me?’ This is really essential, because so many people spend a lot of time trying to do things that they’re not very good at instead of focusing on their core business, which is where you make your money.
It’s a good idea to have a basic knowledge about how things work. For instance, I need to know the best way to plant the plants I want in my garden. I have to know what kind of soil they like, I have to know how much water they like and if they need special care, but I don’t have to sow the seedlings myself if someone else is better at it. I can just buy the plants I want and sow those to skip ahead of the game.
